There are plenty of great places for shopping in Ulaanbaatar. For tourists seeking souvenirs there are many places that sell traditional Mongolian and Kazakh handicrafts and souvenirs. A popular destination for shoppers is the Narantuul market, also called the “Black Market”. This huge open-air market has vendors of all types and usually the best prices can be found here. Cashmere is another popular buy for tourists because of the low prices that can be found in Mongolia. There is no shortage of Cashmere shops in the city center. The large State Department Store in the center of Ulaanbaatar city is also a popular destination for shoppers because of its large selection of western food and international products. It offers a large selection of food, clothing, electronics, appliances and also a great souvenir display. And other major shopping centers are Sky shop, Metromall shopping center, Hi fi megastore, Altai center, Tsagaan alt wool shop, Souvenir house etc.

As Ulaanbaatar is becoming a metropolitan city, there have been a number of shopping centers, indoor and outdoor whole-sale markets and boutiques have been opening rapidly in the past couple of year. They offer wide variety of unique national brands which include cashmere, carpets, leather goods, camel wool products and organic food.

State department store 

The State Department Store is the largest shopping mall in Mongolia, a leftover of the Soviet occupation. You can find cashmere and leather here, in addition to whatever else you might find in a department store. It occupies several floors. Mongolian souvenirs are generally found on the 5th floor. It's also a great place to stock up on backpacking and camping gear. Recently upgraded, it is open till early evening.

French Luxury fashion brands comes to Ulaanbaatar

Description: On October the 23rd 2009, Louis Vuitton inaugurated its first store in Mongolia, in the capital city of Ulaanbaatar. Already a pioneer in emerging markets such as India and China, Louis Vuitton becomes the first luxury brand to establish a presence in the region. The 490-square-meter store occupies a prominent position at the entrance of Central Tower, the city's premier retail real estate and luxury quarter, a powerful symbol of modern Mongolia located on the main square of the capital city Ulaanbaatar. The new outlet proposes a stunning display window featuring Louis Vuitton luggage, handbags, shoes, watches, ready-to-wear and accessories. The architecture draws inspiration from Mongolia's nomadic culture and the innovative creativity that is emblematic of the brand. The facade of the store incorporates the iconic Louis Vuitton Damier pattern in a stunning "moiré" effect. Spanning two levels, the store offers a VIP room and a Bag Bar. The entrance features a magnificent saddle designed specially for the store, symbolizing the fusion of the brand's travel heritage and Mongolia's tradition of expert horseback riding. For the inauguration Louis Vuitton asked artist Abdesslam Oulahbib to create an original music piece inspired by traditional Mongolian music. The collaboration led to Resonance, a contemporary hymn that ventures through time and space as breathing, voices, wind and vibrations resonate like a journey to the edges of terrestrial frontiers. Louis Vuitton is also committed to supporting the development of the host countries where it does business. To mark the opening of the new store the company has donated 6,300 books to Mongolia's Ministry of education, to be used in 700 primary schools.
